Having beaten Havant & Waterlooville in the previous round, hopes of further FA Cup progression were high ahead of the trip to Ryman League side Whyteleafe. On a long, energy-sapping pitch Sports dominated the early part of the game, roared on by a superb travelling contingent. As the game wore on however, the home side gradually gained the upper hand and won the tie with a single goal in the 2nd half. Whyteleafe went on to beat Bognor in the 4th Qualifying Round, and hosted then-Football League side Chester City in the 1st Round proper. 1998/99 still probably represents the best chance Langney ever had of reaching the 1st Round stage.
